“People respond in accordance to how you relate to them. If you approach them on the basis of violence, that's how they will react.

But if you say, we want peace, we want stability, we can then do a lot of things that will contribute towards the progress of our society.”
- President Nelson Mandela

Jeremy J Hawkes
Executive Director

Jeremy Hawkes joined our organization in January of 2022. He comes to NARJ with a passion to see restorative justice as a healthy functional process to resolve the harm inflicted within ourselves and others. From a distant past, Jeremy has experienced first hand the punitive response to disobedience from our justice system. The experience was difficult to navigate, faced with unwarranted consequences and immeasurable challenge to recover. With some luck, he was able to find the support and community to take advantage of opportunities that was not easily attainable. Today, Jeremy has expanded NARJ services and training throughout Northern Arizona.  He is mentor for youth and provides support for those who are in need of repairing relationships. And through restorative practices, he is committed to defining shared values, building character and developing a sense of community for everyone.

Giving back has always been of great import to Jo. She served on the Board of Make-A-Wish of Northern Arizona for 13 years, Sedona Godmothers for three years, has been a facilitator with Restorative Justice for the last 10 years and joined the board in 2014.

Leslie Grabel
Board Member

Leslie Grabel, has a BA in French and Spanish literature, a Master’s in teaching English as a Second
Language and Applied Linguistics. She has had extensive and ongoing professional development
in Race Theory, Trauma-Informed Care, and Social and Emotional Learning. She is a Restorative Practices Trainer for the Flagstaff Unified School District and for Restorative Solutions. Having been a teacher of English as a Second Language to the immigrantpopulation for the past 20 years, she has seen firsthand the racial and social injustices that her
students have endured resulting in the disproportionate discipline that is targeted at this
population. By leading trainings in Restorative Practices and by being a member of the RP
Implementation Team at FUSD, she is hopeful that there will be a decrease in the school to
prison pipeline, and more opportunities for growth, and success.

Liza Louden

Eliza Louden hails from Salt Lake City, UT. She graduated with a Bachelors of Science in Sociology from Southern Utah University. After college, Liza spent two years in Washington DC fighting for affordable housing and teaching kayaking on the weekends. She moved out to the Verde Valley in 2008 and immediately became involved in social services. Most of her career in the Verde Valley has been with Catholic Charities where she worked with the homeless population in a variety of ways, including running the first homeless drop in center in Cottonwood. Her passion for people eventually lead her to the Yavapai County Adult Probation Department, where she currently serves as an Adult Probation Officer. When she's not engaged in her civic work, you can find Liza and her two daughters camping on Mingus or kayaking the Verde River.
